6 Jigidem Igbo Gospel Songs You Should Listen To

If you are even a casual or occasional listener of Nigerian gospel music, you'll notice that some songs share the exact same title.

One of such recurring song titles is Jigidem, which in Igbo means "Hold me" or "Uphold me."

I started compiling this list about two years ago (can you believe it?) and yet I have just 6 songs to share today.  Honestly, I would have loved a much longer list, but it's just these 6 songs for now.

In no particular order, here are six songs titled "Jigidem" rendered almost entirely in Igbo:

  1. Numen - Jigidem
  2. 6 Team - Jigidem Aka (Hold my hands)
  3. Axios Choir - Jigidem
  4. Brother Emmanuel and Brother Lazarus (Voice of the Cross) - Jigidem Onye Nwem
  5. Uchay Davis - Jigidem
  6. Winny A1 - Jigidem

And now, the fun part: listen to each song.  Enjoy!

1. Numen - Jigidem

I came across this song several years ago in law school, and I have loved it since then.  It was only a matter of time before I shared it here. :-)

P.S.  I have looked for this song or even the album to buy.  No such luck. Why now, Numen?  :-(

2. Six Team - Jigidem Aka

Six Team or 6-Team's song titled Jigidem Aka (Hold my hands) was my introduction to the music of these young men many years ago.  They also released another song (Eyen O).  But today, we're featuring only Jigidem Aka in this well-produced music video.  Listen to it, and thank me later.  :D

3. Axios Choir - Jigidem

If you've never heard of Axios Choir, what planet have you been living on? Okay, okay, I forgive you.

Axios is the choir of Babcock University.  After listening to their version of Jigidem, do yourself a favor, and download I Bu Ngalaba (The Pillar).  Both the acapella and non-acapella version.  And while you're at it, watch the official video too.

You won't regret it, trust me.

4. Brother Emmanuel and Brother Lazarus
(Voice of the Cross) - Jigidem Onye Nwem

This is a classic, and is the oldest song on this list.  And from the beginning, you notice that it shares some of the same lyrics with # 1 (Jigidem by Numen).  I like both versions.  For some people, this is the version they grew up listening to.

Here's one version of the lyrics with translations courtesy of a commenter on YouTube:

JIGIDE M, ONYE NWEM JESUS JIGIDE M...
JIGIDE M OH, JIGIDE M, ONYE NWEM JESUS JIGIDE M...
OSO GI, NKE M NA AGBA, MMERI GI KA M GA EMERI UWA...
NYE M IKE, OGE NIILE KA M GHARA IDA...

Translation:

UPHOLD ME, MY LORD JESUS UPHOLD ME...
UPHOLD ME, MY LORD JESUS UPHOLD ME...
IN THE RACE TO MAKE HEAVEN, LORD JESUS UPHOLD ME, WITH YOUR VICTORY I WILL OVERCOME THE WORLD...
GIVE ME THE STRENGTH EVERYDAY TO RUN THIS HEAVENLY RACE SO THAT I WILL NOT FAIL...

5. Uchay Davis - Jigidem

Uchay was featured on this blog about two years ago for his other single, Oghene Tega.  But today, it's strictly a "Jigidem affair." :-)

6. Winny A1 - Jigidem

And last, but certainly not the least, we have Winny A1 (Real Name: Godwin Dengiyeifa Linus), a gospel artiste who was born in Jos, Plateau State, but is actually from Bayelsa State.  Here's his own version of Jigidem, which you can download for free:

What songs do you think should be on this list?  Any favorites? Feel free to share.
