Promise for the Week: Isaiah 62:3 (ESV)

God is at Work in Your Life

16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

2 Kings 6:16-17 (NIV)

In 2 Kings 6, the Bible records the story of Elisha and his servant, Gehazi.  The King of Aram had sent his soldiers to capture Elisha for warning the King of Israel of going to places the Arameans planned to attack.  It was like having a spy in the Aramean camp, revealing their secrets and telling it to the Israelites, during a time when both parties were at war with each other.

The interesting part of the story concerns Gehazi who began to panic when the Aramean soldiers arrived to capture Elisha.  They surrounded the city with an army of horses and chariots just to capture one man!

Now you can understand Gehazi's fear.  Yet, Elisha told him not to be afraid.  Why? Because those who were with them far surpassed those who were against them.  Once Elisha prayed for God to open Gehazi's eyes, Gehazi saw what Elisha saw and knew then that God was at work.

Soundtrack for the Week: Rise Again - Stage One

Stage One via Facebook

.... And just like that we are at the cusp of another new week.  Time for sober reflection ....

As you step into this brand new week, I want you to meditate on the lyrics to this song by Stage One.  It is called Rise Again.

Stage One is a Christian rock band based in Jos, Plateau and I have shared some of their songs here in the past.  Rise Again is by far my favorite, and I believe there is someone reading this (including myself) who needs to hear these words:

Feeling Discouraged, Sad, Angry or Frustrated? Pray with a Psalm!

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me!
Many are they that rise up against me.
Many there be which say of my soul,
There is no help for him in God. Selah.
But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me;
My glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
Psalm 3: 1 - 3 (KJV)

---

This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,
they go on amassing wealth.
Psalm 73: 12 (NIV)

---

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
Psalm 119: 105 (ESV)

There are moments in life when you open your mouth to pray but you just can't find the words.  While you can choose to listen to music or worship God in those moments, here's something else you can do: pray with a psalm.

Just Keep Walking

Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest
if we do not give up.

Galatians 6: 9 (NIV)

March is quickly drawing to a close.  In fact, next week Monday is the last day of March (Relentless, why did you have to remind me? *groan*)  Well, why's that important? Because it officially marks the end of the first quarter of the year.

Yes, as soon as March ends, the first three months of the year are gone.

If you're like me, you're evaluating your decisions this year.

What have I done with the past three months?

Unswerving

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23 (NIV)

This is probably one of the few posts where I actually use just one word in the title.  I think it is worth celebrating.

Hope, Faith and a Jack-in-the-Box

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
when we pray for you, because we have heard of
your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for
all God’s people— the faith and love that spring from the hope
stored up for you in heaven and about which you have
already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you.

Colossians 1:  3-6 (NIV )

I think clowns are creepy.  You can imagine what I think of jacks-in-the-box.  Creepy raised to the power 100.  But, what does this have to do with hope and faith.  Well, let's find out, shall we?

Wise Mind = Wise Man

From a wise mind comes wise speech;
the words of the wise are persuasive.

Proverbs 16: 23 (NLT)

Have you ever met any person whose ambition in life was to increase in foolishness?  Okay, let me re-phrase my question: have you met anyone who admitted that he/she wanted to become more and more foolish?  I doubt it.  But then, life is full of surprises.  So what's my point? As we grow older, most of us aspire to grow wiser.  So, increasing in wisdom is an acknowledged goal.

When Fear Spoke

“I know the Lord has given you this land,” she told them.
“We are all afraid of you. Everyone in the land is living in terror.

Joshua 2: 9 (NLT)

If I had to ask you what you were afraid of, you would probably name things like animals, disaster, people, etc.  And maybe you have valid reasons for being afraid of these things.  But, let's flip this over for one second.  What if the things (and people) you fear are actually afraid of you? That would change things now, wouldn't it?

What You Sow, You Shall Reap

I once heard a preacher say that the first half of the year should be spent sowing the word of God through deliberate confessions, so that you will have a harvest to gather during the second half.

Don't be a Foolish Builder

Unless the Lord builds a house,
the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the Lord protects a city,
guarding it with sentries will do no good.

Psalm 127: 1 (NLT)*

The Storyteller's Rhythm

I'll make this quick and snappy.

I was reading one of the short stories in the Naija Stories Anthology last week.  The specific story I was reading was Tears by Yejide Kilanko and I noticed something: there was a peculiar rhythm that the author maintained while telling this story.  And it was not Yejide's story that alerted me to this for the first time.  It was something I had picked up on while reading other books from various non-African authors too.

The Day After Tomorrow - STOP Procrastinating | Featured Artiste: Olufunmi

One question you should never stop asking yourself is this: What do I want to be when I grow up? You thought writing a whole composition (essay) to answer this question in primary school was the end? Oh no, Chuks! I am assuming that if you are reading this, you no longer watch Sesame Street (at least, not as much as you used to) and you know Santa Claus does not exist.  The issue here though is not the 'growing up' part.  It's the "What I want to be" part that I want to focus on today.

Regardless of where you are today, you can take that one step towards fulfilling your dreams.  Granted, you will need to take more than one step, but that first step is the most crucial.  The problem is that many of us keep sitting down, waiting and hoping for a sign from heaven, waiting for all the ducks to line up in a row, waiting for the perfect timing, before we take that step.

Unfortunately, time waits for no man.  While you were busy giving excuses as to why you should not do that "thing" right now (e.g. start writing that book, write that song, learn that sport, start cloning racoons) others got up, did it, and now you're admiring their work on Facebook and wondering how they became so skilled overnight.  The answer is staring you in the face: they took the first important step.  And they kept working towards their goals.  You nko? What are you waiting for?
